Stormdry Masonry Absorption Test Kit

The Stormdry Masonry Gauge can be purchased individually or as part of the Stormdry Test Kit. The test kit contains four Stormdry gauges together with mastic adhesive and a water bottle. A sample tube of Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream and a brush are also included.

To use the Stormdry Masonry Gauge, simply fix it to a masonry surface using the supplied mastic adhesive, then fill it with water to the “zero” mark. The water will then begin to penetrate into the substrate. Record the level of water remaining inside of the gauge at regular intervals by plotting the readings onto a blank masonry absorption graph (can be found above at “Datasheet & Downloads”). This experiment can be repeated elsewhere on the wall to increase the accuracy of the results.

Detailed usage guidelines for the Stormdry Masonry Gauge can be downloaded free of charge in PDF format by clicking on the ‘Datasheet & Downloads’ above this information.

Other Stromdry Accessories

Stormdry Masonry Absorption Gauge – Stormdry Masonry Absorption Gauge (also known as Karsten Tubes or Rilem Tubes) provide a simple method of comparing the absorption characteristics of different sections of masonry (e.g. bricks, stone, mortar, brick mortar interface, etc…). This information can then be used to help determine possible moiture penetration pathways through a wall that is suffering from rain penetration (penetrating damp).

The Stormdry Gauge is fixed to the wall using a suitable mastic adhesive. It is then filled with water and observed. The time taken for the level of water in the tube to drop indicates the degree of absorbency of the test area.

Application

Application for Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream

  1. Remove any loose mortar, dust etc… using a masonry brush. When biological growth such as moss, algae or lichen needs to be removed, apply SoluGuard Multi-Surface Biocide in accordance with instructions.
  2. Stormdry can be applied by brush around details such as windows. Care should be taken to ensure that Stormdry does not splash onto glass, paintwork, plants, etc. Any splashes should be cleaned away with warm soapy water.
  3. Larger areas can be covered more quickly using roller application. Stormdry can also be applied by electric roller or airless spray – contact our technical department for details.
  4. Check for any “missed” areas that have not been treated (e.g. voids in brickwork, deep mortar beds) and apply Stormdry to these areas using a brush.
  5. Stormdry appears white immediately after treatment – making it easy to tell which areas have been treated.
  6. 15 – 20 minutes after application, Stormdry starts to penetrate into the masonry and the whiteness will fade.
  7. After 24 – 48 hours the wall will have returned to its original appearance.
  8. As Stormdry is formulated to penetrate deeply into masonry it can take up to two months after application for a noticeable “beading effect” to appear when rainfall strikes the wall. The masonry will be resistant to light rain after two to four hours.
  9. A Stormdry Gauge can be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the treatment. The test should be carried out at least 28 days after applying Stormdry which allows the water absorption of the wall before and after treatment to be compared.
